Winter Hymns
Narrative • USA • 2026
158 Minutes
Synopsis: In a single hospital room on a gray winter day, Dr. Linda Vobernik meets a series of patients and families confronting the end of life. Among them are a farmer who refuses to accept his failing body, an English teacher clinging to her students’ futures, and a young electrical line worker whose cancer has stolen his own. As the day unfolds, the room itself feels suspended—somewhere between hospital and afterlife—while Dr. Vobernik’s encounters grow increasingly intimate, testing her faith in the work and revealing the strange beauty that can emerge when life narrows to its final moments.
Winter Hymns is a first for us. It’s not that we’ve never had an encore screening before. TWICE we’ve had to schedule another screening due to technical problems. And just a couple of weeks ago we needed to have an encore screening of The History Of Concrete, because the first one sold out. Winter Hymns is the first film we’re playing again, simply because I want to.
One of my favorite films of the year, Winter Hymns affected me to strongly, it’s one of the very few long-form reviews I’ve written on Letterboxd, and I’d urge you to give that a read. In September, I was speaking on the phone with writer/director Nathan Deming, who told me he would be in town the very next week. I quickly booked a weeknight screening for him, so he could be here in person. Even with very little notice, we brought in almost 50 people on a weeknight.
After the screening, we had an amazing Q&A, that I think almost everyone stayed for.
Since that time, It may be the film I’ve shown that people have wanted to talk about the most, including one person who confronted me at a concert at Pygmalion to tell me about the things they didn’t like about it. After an extended period of time discussing it, I told her I was going to be bringing it back to town for another screening. “I’ll be there!” they said.
You should be there too.
